Andrea Buben's 3-pointer with 25 seconds remaining lifted Midwestern State to a 60-59 win over Incarnate Word Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Buben, who scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half, spotted up on the right wing on a give-and-go off an inbound to can her third trey of the night to give MSU coach Noel Johnson her victory as a collegiate head coach.

The Mustangs (1-1) embark on a four-game road swing Wednesday night at the University of Texas at Arlington. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Midwestern got a solid performance from freshman Cierra Thompson, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. The Llano product connected on 10-of-12 free throws.

The Mustangs used an 11-2 run keyed by a pair of Regiane Araujo layups and a Sunny Satery 3-pointer to take its largest lead of the night at 16-6 with 14:34 to go in the opening half.

But the Cardinals chipped away and would take the lead on a Nikki Brown layup with 4:41 in the first half. Incarnate Word would lead by one at intermission.

The Mustangs increased the lead to 50-42 when Buben nailed a 3-pointer at the 10:49-mark, but once again the Cardinals stormed back on the strength of an 11-1 run to take a 53-51 lead on a Nikki Brown layup with 7:18 to go.

The teams exchanged buckets until a pair of Brown free throws gave UIW a slip 59-57 lead with 1:10 to play before Buben hit the game winner.

Incarnate Word falls to 2-1 on the season.
