Midwestern State’s Maranda Bishop was named to the NCAA Division II South Central Region all-tournament team Sunday after St. Edward’s claimed the region title with a 4-1 win over Southeastern Oklahoma at the Angelo State Softball Complex.

Bishop went 4-for-9 (.444) with a pair of doubles and two stolen bases while scoring four of MSU’s six runs in the tournament.

The junior center fielder from Splendora reached base in 59 of the 63 games she played this season and finished with a .333 average with 10 doubles, seven triples, a homer and 34 RBI.

Other standouts for the Mustangs included sophomore second baseman Tabitha Yannetti, senior third baseman Kristen Stonecipher and sophomore pitcher Katie Petersen.

Yannetti went 3-for-8 (.375) at the plate, while Stonecipher was 3-for-9 and became the Lone Star Conference’s all-time RBI leader by driving in her 171st and 172nd runs of her career.

Former Abilene Christian standout Katie Bryan had 171 from 2002-05.

Petersen, who delivered her 11th shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over St. Mary’s on Tuesday, allowed five runs on 11 hits while fanning 18 and walking six for a 1.84 ERA.

St. Edward’s outfielder Kristen Lozano was named the tournament’s most outstanding player after delivering a bases-loaded, bases-clearing triple with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning to key the decisive four-run inning for the Hilltoppers.

St. Edward’s had only scratched for one hit going into the frame and trailed Southeastern Oklahoma 1-0.

The Hilltoppers open the NCAA Division II Championships Wednesday at 10 a.m. against South Region champion Barry in Houston’s Memorial Park.
