Midwestern State slugged out eight hits and scored seven runs to advantage of two East Central University errors in the second inning as the Mustangs came away with an 8-0 Lone Star Conference North Division win Monday afternoon in Game 1 at Mustangs Park.

Amanda Potysman reached on ECU shortstop Stacia Lemons’ fielding error with one out, then Katie Petersen singled and Ashley Kuchenski to load the bases for Lindsey Voigt.

Voigt hit an RBI groundout to shortstop after East Central catcher Stephannie Larriba dropped a foul pop-up to extend the inning.

Then the Mustangs made ECU starter Kayla Shepherd pay.

Kellie Sledge and Kristen Stonecipher hit back-to-back run-scoring singles before Jessica Rodriguez lined a double to the right-field gap to plate Stonecipher.

Lauren Craig then chased Rodriguez home with a single to left field before Tabitha Yannetti and Potysman singled and drew a walk as six-straight MSU hitters would reach base before Shepherd was pulled from the contest.

Petersen greeted Lady Tigers’ reliever Randee Crokett with a ringing two-run double to left field before Kuchenski ended the inning with a pop-up to first base as 13 MSU batters came to the plate in an eight-run seven-hit frame.

Petersen, who started in the circle for the Mustangs, allowed two hits and struck out three to improve to 15-3 on the season while combining with Brittany Tanner for the five-inning shutout.

Tanner hurled to a pair of hitless innings and struck out one.

Sledge, Stonecipher and Petersen paced MSU’s nine-hit attack with two hits each.

Midwestern State’s Lindsey Voigt connected for her first career grand slam as the Mustangs cruised to an 8-0 Game 2 run-rule of East Central in five innings Monday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

MSU earned a doubleheader sweep of the Lady Tigers as the Mustangs improved to 21-12 on the season and 8-4 in Lone Star Conference North Division play.

East Central fell to 13-15-1 and 4-8.

The Mustangs jumped on Lady Tigers’ starter Dana McLaren with a pair of run in the first inning as Jessica Rodriguez drilled a run-scoring single to score Kristen Stonecipher all the way from first.

Amanda Potysman followed with an RBI-single to center to plate Rodriguez, who had advanced to third on a throwing error to the plate.

But Midwestern State was far from finished.

Tabitha Yannetti and Ashley Kuchenski added RBI singles in the third inning to extend the Mustangs’ advantage to 4-0 before Voigt blasted her sixth homer of the season to dead center field with the bases loaded.

The senior catcher from Wichita Falls tied a career-high in RBI with the blast as she also drove home four runs on April 4, 2007 at Oklahoma Panhandle State.

Sophomore starter Katie Petersen (16-3) allowed four hits and fanned four in four innings of work to earn her second win of the day before Kuchenski came on to pitch a scoreless fifth inning.

McLaren took the loss for ECU after surrendering eight runs – all earned – on 13 hits in four innings to drop to 5-7 on the season.

Voigt, Rodriguez and Kellie Sledge paced the Mustangs with two hits apiece.

The Mustangs are now 11-1 in games played at Mustangs Park.

Midwestern State returns to action on March 26 when the Mustangs travel to Denton to battle Texas Woman’s University. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Pioneers Field.
