A Lawton native is turning a personal tragedy into the battle of her life. Currently Oklahoma daycares are not required to carry liability insurance. Edna Pittman is working to change that. After her three-year-old son was accidently left alone in a daycare van on a summer day nearly killing him.
Last August Edna Pittman got a call no parent ever wants to hear, her 3-year-old son's daycare owner said there had been an accident.
"I said is he ok? And she said I don't know the ambulance is on it's way. Immediately I dropped my phone", said Demarion's Mother Edna Pittman.
3-year-old Demarion was left alone in a van after a daycare field trip for more than 2 hours. His body temperature was 117 degrees when they found him in the back of the van, not even in a car seat. It was Demarion's 6-year-old sister that noticed he was missing.
"It wasn't until that afternoon when they woke up from a nap, my middle child kept asking where's Demarion? One worker told her he didn't come to daycare today and she kept insisting no, my Mommy dropped me and my brother off", said Mrs. Pittman.
Doctors told Edna and her husband to prepare the worst. Their son wasn't expected to make it through the night. But, he did pull through, and remained in a coma for 2 months. Medical bills kept piling up. Edna says she stopped counting once they reached a million dollars. When she went to the daycare center to get insurance information, she was furious to find out they didn't have any. In fact, Oklahoma doesn't require centers to have it.
Edna said, "I knew what the end result would be, as far as my family and our financial future."
Edna is now on a mission, talking to legislatures, hoping to pass a law that would require day cares to carry business insurance so that no family will have to go through what they have. A once care-free toddler who enjoyed running around with his sisters, is now confined to a wheelchair. He can't talk, is fed through a tube, and may never walk again.
"I would cry when I got to the door because before he was always the one to greet me at the door and 'mommy I love you.' I miss him telling me that he loves me", said Edna.
Two months after the tragic accident the State of Oklahoma forced Totally Kids Day Care Center to shut down.
"Demarion's Law" has cleared a state senate committee and is heading to the full senate for consideration.
