Social Security Will Pay Out More than It Takes In

Tools

Over the next two years, Social Security will be paying out more in benefits than it collects in taxes. That hasn't happened since the 1980's.

Applications for Social Security are up 23 percent from last year. Experts say the reason is because many older workers laid off during the recession decided to retire early.

Payments to retirees won't be affected because the social security pool still has a $2.5 trillion surplus.
