Gates Bad Barracks

Fred Smith

FORT BLISS, Texas (AP) - Defense Secretary Robert Gates says he's appalled by video showing moldy and damaged barracks at the Army's Fort Bragg in North Carolina. He told an auditorium of enlisted men at Fort Bliss, Texas, that "soldiers should never have to live in such squalor." Gates ordered all commanders to make sure their troops have decent quarters. The video, which appeared on YouTube, was put together by the father of a soldier whose unit had just returned from Afghanistan. It shows mold, peeling paint, and broken plumbing in the barracks, which date back to the Korean War. Army leaders say improvements are coming, but that some problems can't be fixed quickly.
