Shootout Crash,

Fred Smith

MERCEDES, Texas (AP) - A man was killed after shots were fired as his vehicle and another raced side-by-side and his car crashed in South Texas.Authorities say that the man lost control of the car at some point, hit a tree and flipped several times. Officials said yesterday that they did not yet know if the man - who was traveling alone - was killed by the bullets or the accident. Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino told The Monitor in McAllen that they do know that he was struck by bullets more than one time. Authorities were searching for the other car, which Trevino said fled the scene after the accident. Authorities suspect there were at least three men in the car. Trevino said deputies were working to identify the dead man, who was not carrying any identification.
