Wichita County To Vote On Jail Overflow Issue

The Wichita County Jail is still seeing an over-flow of inmates.

On Monday, County Commissioners will vote on renewing a contract that will allow some inmates to be housed in the Montague County Jail, but that transfer of inmates is not free; the cost for each inmate is paid for by Wichita County. The cost is about $35 a day per inmate housed in another jail.

This summer, the jail saw a record number of inmates with some even having to sleep on the floor.

Sheriff David Duke told us at the time that building a larger book-in unit"could alleviate some of the overflow since 70% of inmates are released within three days.
