The city of Bellevue is looking for the vandals who defaced grave stones at the cemetery. Clay County Sheriff Kenny Lemons suspects that at least four to five people trespassed onto the cemetery grounds Nov. 8.

"These folks have family members that have lived here their whole lives," Lemons said.  "These are folks they take care of - their loved ones - this is their final resting place.  For somebody to do this, they have absolutely no respect for anyone here or themselves."

The culprits knocked head stones to the ground, cracking some in half.  Although Lemons said this criminal mischief is not unprecedented, catching the people behind it could be difficult. 

"The evidence collection here is just nil," Sheriff Lemons said. "You don't have any kind of evidence as far as fingerprints or anything left behind.  It's just really hard to prove."

But some Bellevue residents see a different challenge - how to prevent the this from happening again.

"Find them something to do," the County Sheriff said. "That's the main thing, and they won't get into that.  If they had to pull cotton like I used to they wouldn't be able to go out there."

Whatever the solution is, however, perhaps the best way to move forward is to uphold the ideals of the past and come together as a community.

"Talk to your family, talk to your friends, talk to your kids," Sheriff Lemons said.  "Somebody's gonna know something in the next few days.  It's gonna take one little piece of information to start rolling, and that's how we're gonna get it done."
