More People Turn to Cremation For Their Final Goodbyes
With the economy struggling to recover, people are looking for ways to save, even when it comes to saying their final goodbyes. In an effort to help, the world's largest retailer is now joining the funeral business. As families are being forced to stay on a budget, funeral homes are being forced to adapt because one cheaper solution that is becoming more and more popular is cremations. These days, a full funeral costs a minimum of about $7,000, and that's not including a cemetary plot, so it's no surprise more and more people are turning to cremation. At Owns and Brumley Funeral Home in Wichita Falls, the option costs about a fourth of a full funeral service, coming in just under $2,000. Gerald Fountain, manager and funeral director, said, "Not everybody is for the cremation. Some people do it because they have to. That is the only way they can afford to have a good service for their family." Fountain said in the past year and a half cremations have increased significantly, and he doesn't think it will slow down any time soon. "I think there's a good chance cremation services will rise. One person in the family does it and sometimes they think this is not so bad. This is what mamma really wanted anyhow." In fact, by 2025 it's estimated 60 percent of people will be cremated, mainly because it's cheaper. Also in an effort to help families save on funeral costs, one of the largest retailers in the country is now selling caskets. Walmart is offering 15 caskets on its online store. The cheapest costing $895. Not only that, but dozens of urns are also for sale. Walmart isn't the only store to enter the funeral business. It's biggest competitor, Costco, also sells funeral items on its website. Fountain says some other ways families can save on funeral costs are to do a graveside service only, not use family cars in the funeral procession and like every industry, shop around.
