For the thousands of Texomans with cell phones, staying connected to their kids on Halloween can be as easy as the push of a button. In fact, some parents are are making the device a necessary accessory for all costumes.

There are sure to be dozens of pirates and princesses and gohsts and goblins in every neighborhood. Just in case yours get separated from the group, snapping some quick shots on your cell phone could be a lifesaver later on.

Arens says how parents use a cell phone depends on their child's age. For those youngsters not quite able to use the device themselves, slipping a paper with the parent's contact information inside a pocket is a good idea. Texting is a great way to keep in touch with those old enough to carry a phone . For example, parents can pre-program trick or treat route updates in their phone that way, all they have to do is hit send.

"There's a lot of corralling kids and getting them together and that can be hard at times but think about where you can make it easier to provide safety and facilitate and make a good environment for the kids," Arens said.

He says one way to give kids friendly reminders is to set their cell phone alarm to go off when it's time to check in, meet up or head home.

"It's really taking some strategy and putting it into the whole trick or treating process because it's making it fun for parents and removes some of the stress getting ready for Halloween," Arens said.

Parents should make sure their kids know how to use a cell phone in an emergency. Before sending them out, teach children how to provide their location to the 911 operater by describing landmarks if an address is unknown. Also, be sure all phones for kids and adults have an I.C.E. or in case of emergency contact pre-programed in the cell.
