Drinking and driving can be a danger all year long, but officials said the fourth of July weekend poses a greater risk because of the number of people who celebrate with alcohol. That's why the Wichita Falls Police Department is unveiling a new plan to discourage drunk driving this holiday weekend. Steven Romo has been following the story.
The District Attorney's office is teaming up with local law enforcement for a new initiative this fourth of July weekend. They said their goal is to remind drivers, there is zero tolerance when it comes to drunk driving. The fourth of July is usually a time for family, fireworks, and fun, but the Wichita Falls Police Department warns that it's also a time of more alcohol related accidents.
Harold McClure said, "You need to be mindful of how much partying you actually do. Just be responsible with it."
The District Attorney's office told us the new enforcement plan they have created with the Police Department is designed to serve as a clear warning to drivers, if you drink and drive, you will be prosecuted.
McClure said, "If it warrants being arrested for DWI, the officer is going to do that. You're looking at going to jail, your vehicle impounded, and you're looking at losing your license for awhile."
The Police Department said there will be more patrol units out looking for violators who have had to much to drink.
"So our guys are definitely going to have their eyes out for anything that doesn't look right, and they'll be quick to pull you over and make sure everybody is alright. The main thing is we want everybody to have a good time and we don't want anyone to get hurt," said McClure.
Officials said they hope this joint venture will serve as a reminder of how dangerous drunk driving, or even buzzed driving really is. They also said it's important for drivers to be mindful of others on the road who may have had too much to drink.
"A good driver makes sure they're obeying all the laws, that's a good driver. Now, a defensive driver is one that's going to make sure they're obeying all of the laws and they're watching the other cars around them," said McClure.
The Police Department told us the goal of the crackdown this weekend is to make sure everyone has a fun fourth in the Falls, but also makes it back home safely.
McClure said, "Its the fourth of July. Let's go out and have a good time. Enjoy yourself, but again, enjoy yourself responsibly."
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has issued a warning to drivers north of the Red River; they said they'll also be cracking down on drunk drivers this weekend.
