North Korea Nuclear Test

Lindsay Hunt

Tough talk today from the number two man in North Korea.  Kim Yong Nam is threatening more nuclear tests if the United States continues its quote hostile attitude. And in its first official statement since the unconfirmed test, North Korea says it could respond to U.S. pressure with physical measures. But the White House says its pressure for now will be on the diplomatic side. Today President Bush said, " W'e're working with the UN to make sure NorthKorea understands the consequences of their current path."

At the united nationst today, there's agreement North Korea needs to be punished, but exactly how severely,  that's still being negotiated. Representatives from the five permanent Security Council members and Japan are considering sanctions, but China says the tough penalties proposed by the U.S. would be too crushing for its impoverished neighbor. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said, I I suspect the council will come together and take a fair action against North Korea."

the meantime, Japan has acted on its own, announcing a total ban on North Korean imports. North Korean ships will not be allowed in Japanese ports and most North Korean nationals will not be allowed to enter Japan. As the diplomacy plays outalong the border separating North and South Korea, one U.S. soldier has noticed a subtle change on the communist side. Major Joseph De Varona with the U.S. Army said, "They're just walking around a little bit more proud. They are a little bit more confident."  And while the soldiers watch each otherthe world waits to see if this latest standoff ends peacefully.
