"No I don't feel safe, "says twelve year old victim Shaquille Alexander .

These are the words of an innocent bystander in last weeks shooting, something that many can relate to.

"Obviously it changes their life forever, unfortunately this isn't the first time they've seen something like this," says Straight Street Executive Director J.J. Schweiger.

Straight street ministries is a program that was started in the 90's because of gang related shootings. It offers kids an alternative to street life by allowing them to be themselves . In a non-denominational christian environment air hockey , pool tables, and basketball courts, are used to distract kids from turning to violence.

"They need somebody that says they're going to be there and be there. That seems to be the biggest issue, they don't trust people,"says Schweiger

Ex gang member Mason Woodard used to live his life on the streets, but quickly changed his life around.

"I had to make a decision whether to continue this life, to end up like a lot of my peers or do i want to make a positive change in my life," says Woodard.

Mason now devotes his time to straight street in hopes of helping others from going down the path he once lived.

"The ones you know, people kind of give up on, they come in here and you see a softer side,"
says Woodard.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from Straight Street, they can call 716-9898.
