About 50 Texoma boys are learning some new skills this weekend. It's all part of the Northwest Texas Field and Stream annual Boys' Deer Hunt. But it's about more than just bringing home a big buck.

The Northwest Texas Field and Stream Association has been hosting the annual Boys' Hunt for more than 30 years. The event gives kids who would not otherwise have the opportunity, a shot at hunting their first deer. Each participant is paired with a guide who walks them through each step of process.

"We don't want kids to shoot illegally. We want them to have respect for animals and the outdoors," said Field and Stream member Billy Toft. 

For many of these boys it's the first time they've shot a gun.

"Some are wide eyes some are natural shooters some enjoy it and some one time and that's it," said Game Warden Eddie Hood. 

Although it may be a bit nerve wracking, many of the young men have high hopes for what they'll have to show by the end of the weekend.

"Trying to Get a doe or maybe a hog," Chris Beck said.

It takes hundreds of volunteers to put on this event. Including several land owners who donate property and they say over the year's it's come a long way

"To start with it was nothing but a dirt floor," said land owner Ed Stewart.  

"We've got kids who hunted 30, 40 years ago who came back and are guides as adults. We know we're making a difference," said Jack County Coordinator Ronney Smith.
