On this Travelin Tuesday, we're looking at one way Texoma residents can volunteer. Heather Mills is live at the ARC of Wichita County with more.

The ARC of Wichita County is moving to a new building, and workers need all the help they can get this year. Dan Garcia joins me now with a look at what the ARC does for Texoma, how it started, and why you should help. The ARC of Wichita County is a thriving center of activity for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It orginally began fifty-eight years ago as a nationwide grass roots movement that realized a need and met it.

"It's been a wonderful experience, dedication of so many people to keep this non-profit organization strong throughout." Marlene Goldstein has been with the ARC for the twenty-five years. She said one of the greatest things is seeing the number of services the agency provides continue to grow.

"The majority of people with developmental disabilities are educable and trainable, thats the most important thing. Years ago institutionalization was the only choice."

And all of those programs are geared to the client and just as importantly.

"Locally our organization provides an array of services. First of all, one of the most important things is helping the family."

Some services include: one on one mentoring, child care, after school care, social development programs, and summer camps to name a few. Services many people count on, not only for help, but also for the development of the client. Heather, earlier you were talking about the ARC of Wichita County moving.

They're going to need some help with that and I am encouraging anyone who wants to help to call the ARC of Wichita County and offer to assist with the move.
