Residents Want Better Recycling Program

Lindsey Rogers

Good evening, I'm Chris Horgen. Heather Mills will joins us live in a few minutes. Some Wichita Falls residents aren't happy about the city's recycling program. Lindsey Rogers reports in our Eye On The Falls.

Citizens want changes made to the Wichita Falls recycling program.

Heather Vasquez said, "We have a good start but we're way behind where we could be for a city of this size."

Right now, the city offers curb side pick up for organic materials only. So all other items, like glass or plastic, need to go to specific recycling dumpsters at various locations.

Sister Josephine Stewart said, "Very inadequate and very difficult for elderly to recycle where curb side would make it very easy."

Concerned residents packed council chambers, telling city leaders many people don't even know where drop off points are.

Sister Stewart said, "We know even though people have best intentions to recycle but the more convenient it is the more people will. The drop off is great, but curb side would really up the ante on recycling."

The environmentally concious would also like to see a recycling plant built in Wichita Falls, instead of the city sending materials to Dallas. Mayor Lanham Lyne said in time, that could be a possibility.

Mayor Lyne said, "The question really is how much are the citizens willing to bear of that cost. Whether it be a portion or all or some mix of that."

Mayor Lyne said they're going to talk with some of the citizens who were at today's council meeting. They'll look at their proposals, talk about city restrictions they may not be aware of, and any feasible changes the city can make. Ultimately they're going to try and meet in the middle.

Great job, Heather! Raising recycling awareness might seem tough but its success will benefit our city and our Earth.
