At the sheppard air force base clinic, volunteers are spreading the word about the benefits of not smoking.  Free resources such as chewing gum and medications are available to those struggling to quit, and some residents say it's working.  One local resident was optimistic that "Now with them offering Zyban and the Welbutrin again, it's worked for me in the past. I quit for over a year, so I think it will work again."

Another resident stated, "Some days I still have the cravings, especially when I'm in a group with other smokers, but knowing what I know, I suppress them and I don't have to go there anymore."

Experts say quitting the habit has dramatic health improvements. Here are just a few: In just 20 minutes after not smoking--blood pressure decreases. In two weeks to three months, lung function and circulation improves and walking becomes easier. One quitter remarked, "I do feel healthier. I actually don't have urges, and it's one of the hardest things I had to do."

Another quitter also felt that "I saw improvement in my physical fitness, overall health, and my home life, believe it or not."

If smokers quit for five to fifteen years...The risk for several cancers, including lung cancer, drops significantly...And the risk for stroke equals that of a non smoker. That's why the smokeout is seen only as a first step.  Sgt. Kevin Thornhill said, "Ultimately, you know, giving people information, we're trying to get them to make it a lifestyle not just a one day thing."

It's important to remember that the average smoker quits 7-10 times, so the challenge is not only in quitting originally, but in making sure that you continue to live your life smoke-free. This year there’s a new idea called Quit and Stay Quit Monday - smokers who make the decision to quit smoking on the Great American Smokeout can reaffirm their commitment to staying tobacco free on the following Monday and each Monday after that. Check out www.healthymonday.org/stayquit for more info.
