Shoppers looking to cook up a feast this Thanksgiving will spend a bit more at the grocery store this year. But before you cut back on tasty trimmings, we have some tips to make your holiday dinner delicious and affordable!
While the price at the pump is down, many of us are still waiting for a similar relief in our grocery bills, and with a just over a week until Thanksgiving, it's needs to happen fast. Thankfully a little help from the experts is coming through.
This Thanksgiving, many will feast on the favorites like Turkey, Stuffing, and Pumpkin Pie, but studies show a 6% increase in cost. A steep change from last year, however, there are easy ways to save big. Starting with some home cooking, especially when it comes to the turkey.
Market Street Assistant Service Manager Cody Ramsey said, "Buy it and cook it yourself, because you're actually paying for a convenience fee when you buy a prepared meal."
"Meals made from scratch can often save you up to 50%, so when you get ready to go the store, have a plan and stick to a list." said Tyra M.Carter, PhD, RD, LD
Regardless of what type of meat you buy this Thanksgiving, it's important to figure out the price per serving to get the best deal. Also keep in mind that a pound of food will actually serve four people.
"People think that just because it's a higher price or a well known company brand that it's going to be a better turkey, and that's not always the case." said Ramsey.
November specials and ads are another easy way to cut cost. You may be able to cook ahead of time or even get stuff you're going to need for the future.
And to make it all a little less hectic, remember to check displays. That's were you're going to find holiday items. It's also more convenient so you're not walking up every aisle fighting traffic.
You can also save money on decorations. Instead of buying things like centerpieces, use your children's Thanksgiving art projects, or have them craft something at home. For ideas, head to the links section and click on ''Thanksgiving Crafts.''
