Eye on Texoma: WWII Airborne Demonstration Team

Katy Poole

It was a rare opportunity to relive the past this weekend in Frederick, Oklahoma. The World War II Airborne Demonstration Team graduated sixteen students and with their nostalgic military uniforms and gear, it was like taking a jump back into the 1940's.  The airplane hanger was built in 1942 and is now the headquarters of the World War II Airborne Demonstration Team.  Craig Sinhaus if the demonstration team says, "What we'd eventually like to see is create a facility that is a WW II living history center, a place where people can come see how the greatest generation lived liked."  Restoration isn't cheap for the non-profit and volunteer-based organization. Singhaus says the roof alone costs about $20,000 to repair. For the students and veterans alike, the jump school is more than just a piece of historical architecture. There are only 4 or 5 hangars of its kind left in the world.  The students say it's a privilege to jump.  It's a week long course and five qualified jumps.  The stakes may not be as high as when the vets went to war, but worth every sip of calvados and the wings they now proudly wear on their uniforms. Now most students are associated with a military branch, but anyone can go through jump school and earn their wings.
