The U.S. government is watching and recording Americans traveling in and out of the country by land.

Officials say border checkpoints are being used to expand its U.S. citizen database. The government says this is all part of an effort to guard against terrorists threats.

The system also represents a growing number of government systems containing personal information on Americans.
