Several people are thankful for emergency crews and citizens who rescued them from the floodwaters. One local man saved his nephew and a stranger. Petty Officer 2nd Class Craig Brewer says the first thing on his mind was finding his nephew, and making sure he was okay.
Barefoot and wearing only a Navy T-shirt and shorts, Petty Officer 2nd Class Craig Bewer, his wife. and sister-in-law set out to save his 21-year-old nephew from the storm on Monday night. Craig says his nephew's cell phone had died and all he knew was Matt Curry was somewhere on Wellington Road, stranded. "We came on in about 1/2 mile or so is where we had to stop and then we walked in here in the water."
Against the odds and nature's powerful wrath, Craig Brewer waded through waist-deep waters to save his nephew. Craig found Matt nearly two hours later, in a tree. "I wasn't nervous until that point where the water started moving my legs and I thought, 'Just stay calm and he'll stay calm.'"
Craig's wife, Becky Brewer says, "Craig got down in with him up to his shoulders. Craig braced himself and said, 'You just gotta trust me.'" Craig's mom says her son has always been a good navigator, and she knew he would be able to find Matt. "I would trust him with my life or anybody else, and he's proven that."
And the reward for this heroic man? "He probably owes me dinner I guess," says Craig.
After getting Matt to safety, Craig helped another stranded citizen whose car was flooded. He says he doesn't know who the other man is, but it didn't matter because he was in trouble.
Matt Curry is still recovering from the ordeal. He suffered bruises, poison ivy, and bug bites while in the tree. But, his family says, he's doing much better.
