Midwestern State University is launching a new program designed to give students with Autism Spectrum Disorders the opportunity to experience traditional college life.

Three MSU students studying special education will be sharing an on-campus house with three students with Autistism Spectrum Disorders. They'll be serving as peer mentors and helping the ASD students with life, study and social skills.

"More and more people are being diagnosed with Autism Disorders it's just a matter of providing something if they want to pursue college we're here for them," said one of the peer mentors Jessica Dunn.

MSU's Autism Support Program was created by five graduate students last February. Dunn says she and her classmates saw a need for this type of program... because bright autistic students who were capable of going to college didn't have the opportunity.

"This is a place for them to kind of take refuge and get some support that they need to transition into a traditional college life," Dunn said.

The program kicks off this year. The goal is that in a year or two these students can take the skills they've learned and be able to adapt to life in a dorm or eventually live on their own.

"It's an opportunity not only for the students, but for us learning from them," said another peer mentor Casey Kiper.

The peer mentors say they've learned the skills they need to work with the students through their special education classes. One thing they've learned is what they can and can not have in the house. No cleaning supplies with strong aromas or air fresheners are allowed. Also, no mirrors or bright colors and they must stay on schedule with meals and medicine.

"I think we prepared ourselves mentally about just being used to what the students needs are and helping them in any way I can," said Kiper
