DEMING, N.M. (AP) - The chairman of the Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma says it will remove the electronic bingo machines from a yet-unopened casino off Interstate 10 at Akela near Deming. Chairman Jeff Houser says his tribe has been leasing the machines from another Oklahoma tribe, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, which had deferred lease payments until June 10 to give the Fort Sill Apaches time to open its casino. But last month an advisory opinion from the National Indian Gaming Commission said there's no basis under federal law for the tribe to be able to operate a casino on land it owns near Deming. Houser says the Potawatomi Nation wants the bingo machines back so his tribe is returning them. He says the Fort Sill tribe still is pursuing a gambling operation.
