Outrunning a Tornado: Resident Speaks Out

News1 KAUZ

Last weekend, 22 people were killed in tornadoes that struck Oklahoma and Missouri. A third of those deaths were people in cars trying to flee the tornados. The same happened to many in Wichita Falls, when the F-4 tornado struck in 1979.
That's why Wichita Falls resident Debbie Blaine continues to speak out to this day.
Blaine says she spent several frantic hours searching for her three-year-old son. He had been with the babysitter that day. When the storm struck, the babysitter loaded up the kids in a car and tried to flee.
Debbie Blaine, 1979 tornado survivor, says, "They were trying to get to Iowa Park and it was quite a-ways, but they were only a mile from her house...they got caught under an 18-wheeler there that saved them."
Blaine says the 18-wheeler kept the car from being tossed around like a toy and that's what she believes saved her son's life.
