Local Democratic Convention Sees Large Turnout

The race is still tight in the Democratic presidential election, and interest is high right here in Wichita County. Democrats held their County Convention Saturday at Barwise Junior High School to elect delegates to send to the State Convention in Austin. More than 500 delegates and alternates were chosen a few weeks ago on Election Day at Precinct Conventions in Wichita County. On Saturday, 29 delegates were chosen from Wichita County for the State Convention in June.

Officials say 15 delegates from Wichita County will represent Sen. Obama and 14 will represent Sen. Clinton. Turn out for the convention was high and the crowd was diverse.

Democratic Chair Allyn Arnold says, "It's a good cross section of people. We've got young, we've got old. We've got racial diversity. We've even got some gays and lesbians. We're an all inclusive party and we're all participating."

The caucus took hours to finish but spirits remained high.

Precinct Delegate Karen Fletcher says, "It's just really exciting to meet a lot of other people it's just a lot of fun because there's a lot of friendly competitiveness between the groups."

Cindy Saillant, also a Precinct Delegate says, "This is amazing. I've never done this in my entire life and now I'm doing it. It's because everyone's excited. It's time for a change."

Even though the process was confusing, officials say the high participation brought the party together.
