The third homicide in Wichita Falls happened last Friday in a hotel room at the Econo Lodge. After police officers release a crime scene, the clean-up process can be a lengthy one. It can take up to five days to clean just a room because of all the health hazards that could pose a threat.
ServiceMasters is a local cleaning service which deals with what it calls "trauma clean-up." The first thing owner Frank McKnight said he does is make sure employees are protected. They wear protective gear that includes everything from special gloves, goggles, boots and a respiratory mask. When they go into a room or home where a violent crime was committed, their primary concern is getting rid of anything that has bodily fluids, including blood.
"We have special chemicals that we use that kill blood born pathogens such as hepatitis B, aids, staph... infectious material," McKnight said.
He said they'll cut out carpet and the padding underneath, to clean the floor.
But anything that has blood on it, "Usually it's incinerated and gotten rid of--that way there's no way it can contaminate anything else, " McKnight said,"It's something you can't clean. You just have to get rid of it."
To get rid of odors, they use an ozone machine combined with citrus products.
McKnight said in the case of the Econo Lodge murder, hotel owners should get rid of anything made out of cloth.
"Bedding, sheets, mattresses that are contaminated because you really can't clean a mattress because it soaks up inside the mattress," he said.
McKnight said he will never forget his first trauma clean up. Back in 2004, two people--including a young boy-- were shot on the North side of town.
"The homeowner ended up repainting everything. The walls, in some cases, it gets so bad you have to cut it out and even cut the sheet rock out cause you can't dispose of it," McKnight said.
State Representative David Farabee said there aren't any laws requiring hotels to inform guests or potential owners, that a crime was committed inside a room.
