Bicycle Safety Issues in Wichita Falls

Hotter -N- Hell Hundred put Wichita Falls On the map as far as cycling goes. Now, Gas prices are going up, local bike shops are seeing more customers, and city leaders expect to see more bike traffic across the city.

Transportation Director John Burrus says, "I think our motorist are going to see more bicycles out there on the road and I think that they're going to become an everyday part of our traffic and traveling life."

Bike shop owners and city leaders agree, with the increase in bike traffic there needs to be safer means for bikers to get around. The city has a lot of plans for biking in Wichita Falls. They want to complete the hike and bike trails and make sure they connect. They'd like to add some public rest rooms and bike racks. They also would like to see bike lanes go in on city roads, the problem is there's no funding.

Jarvis Polvado with Texoma Cycling Center says, "The city was going to match the funds they needed on the trail, on the bike lanes, but funding got pulled by the federal government and that put all that to a screeching halt."

The city's top priority is finishing the hike and bike trail. They say that will help cyclist get around the city safely

Polvado says, "I think once you get off the bike path to get close to your work you still would need some bike lanes to help the flow of traffic."

Until the dollars come in, the brakes have been put on the city's plans. Since Wichita Falls doesn't have bike lanes yet, bike experts at Texoma Cycling Center say if you're going to ride be safe about it. Stay off the sidewalk and obey the same traffic rules you would if you were driving a car.

Far more important than bike lanes or bike paths is educating drivers that cyclists have a *right* to the road equal to theirs and that motorists *must* SHARE THE ROAD with cyclists.
