The Wichita Falls City Council is taking measures to protect your rights. Councilors are expected to pass a resolution that will uphold the Constitution of the United States. It also says it will not stand for any form of terrorism. The resolution is something one concerned citizen says is long past due.
Kelly Mestas has been working with the Bill of Rights Defense Committee. He says, "Yes, we need to be aware of terrorism. Yes, September 11th was a horrible thing. It's also a horrible thing if, because of our fear, we sacrifice the rights and liberty our Founding Fathers fought so hard to get for us."
Mestas says Americans are in danger of losing rights under the Patriot Act.
"Little by little, we don't want to give up our rights because then the terrorists win."
Ten other Texas cities have similar resolutions which promise to uphold the Constitution at all costs. The resolution doesn't directly oppose the Patriot Act. City Councilor Glenn Barham says our Nation's checks and balances system is responsible for determining what is or is not Constitutional, not city government.
City Councilor Glenn Barham says, "The city upholds the Constitution of the United States and of the State of Texas. We will enforce both of those documents and we encourage our citizens to read it and become familiar with it."
"We're very glad that the council has created a resolution that they will vote on tomorrow during the city council meeting," Mestas says.
Councilor Barham says the resolution will likely pass at the meeting tomorrow.
