For the past couple of days we've been warning consumers about a food recall. Certain cans of hot dog chili sauce and corned beef contained a rare and deadly toxin. Castleberry's food company in Augusta, Georgia forced to close it's doors--cans of chili sauce tested positive for the toxin that causes a deadly disease.
Products have been pulled off the shelves here in Wichita Falls. It's known as botulism. It's rare--but untreated can cause your muscle's to paralyze.
Angie Gass is a Nursing Administrator at the City's Public Health Department. She says so far, four cases have been reported...Two are in Texas.
"Of these brands, I know that the city had identified some of the cans in Wichita Falls but those have been removed, " Gass said.
Local food inspectors say at least 17 cans of the recalled chili have been sold in Wichita Falls--but that number could be higher. There's an immediate warning for ten different canned products.
Because of improper food manufacturing, the toxin grows in the can before the manufacturing is completed.
Gass says there are symptoms to look out for: "If they're experiencing severe signs and symptoms of difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, double vision--things of that nature--they need to get checked out immediately, " Gass said.
The toxin is so powerful, that if it gets on people's hands or face, it can make them sick. She adds with any illness--the risks are more severe for children and senior citizens.
The recalled foods all have "best buy" dates from April 30, 2009 through may 22, 2009. If you have any of the products, officials says return them to the store you bought them at for a refund.
