First it was spinach... and then beef. Another food product is in the spotlight after a recall by the Federal Drug Administration. The FDA recalled thousands of pounds of chicken and meat because of a potentially deadly bacteria called listeria monocytogenes. It can cause serious or deadly infections in children, the elderly, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

"It is a slow growing bacteria that can grow in refrigeration temperatures and that's concerning because even if a product is refrigerated, it can still have bacteria growth," General Environmental Coordinator Fernando Tezaquic said.

The City-County Public Health Department said it sees about two recalls a week. But consumers in Wichita Falls don't have to worry about the latest one. Tezaquic said none of the recalled products made it to our area.

Still, he warns consumers should always take precaution even when the FDA doesn't specify where potentially harmful food was distributed.

Even so, Tezaquic believes the National Food Supply is safe.

"The recall system kinda shows us that because we are hearing a lot about recalled products. As a consumer just be aware. If you hear it, check your pantry. Make sure you don't have any of those products," He said.

If there's ever a concern in town, inspectors are sent out immediately to grocery stores to make sure managers are aware of the recall, and are taking the right actions.

Tezaquic said although there has been some concern with products locally, there hasn't been a case of serious illnesses.
