Cold Case: Jacob Tays

KAUZ News

His name was Hacobo Tays, but friends knew him as Jacob. His brother, German, says Jacob was a hard worker but loved to go out with friends. Unfortunately, the night of September 22, 1985 was anything but a good time.

It was a cold, cloudy, and windy Sunday night, close to 11:30. Drinks and pool games were in full swing at Emma's lounge, but no one knew that the local bar was minutes from becoming a crime scene.

"He might have been with friends or with other patrons at the bar when someone came up to him. I don't know if he pushed, shoved, knocked, or something but there was some type of physical confrontation." said Harold McClure, officer of the Wichita Falls Police Department.

From there, police say Jacob confronted the man who pulled out a gun and shot Jacob multiple times.

"There was another person that saw what was going on and was luckily able to get the gun away from the suspect... we think he struck him in the face and mouth..." reported McClure.

The suspect took off, but the gun was left behind.

"... so we are able to recover weapon, which is a good thing, but we are just needing help in getting the ID of the shooter."

Shortly after the deadly shots were fired, German Tays got the tragic news about his younger brother.

"My brother and his friend show up and say your brother has been killed..." said T

German says his other brother was also at the bar and that Jacob knew the gunman from a previous job. The argument started out as drunk bantering that quickly turned violent. Police say no one at the bar could or would identify the man who's still getting away with Jacob's murder, but they hope 23 years later, that someone will...

"They will say 'Hey i was there i remember that i might have been afraid to come forward then but i'm not now i know police need help so let me get them that.'" says McClure.

At the time, the suspect was described as a 29-year-old Hispanic male.

Jacob Tays was a brother, son and, father. His family is desperatly seeking closure in this case, so if you have any information on this tragic crime please call Crime-Stoppers at 322-9888.
