The book called The Egypt Game is part of a reading list in a fourth-grade class at Southern Hills Elementary. Some parents have a problem with the reading selection. The book has been an optional part of the Wichita Falls School District's curriculum for years. However, the Turnbow family said they won't stop until the book is banned.

It's a Newbery Award-winning story about a group of children who invent a game involving Egyptian gods, but the Turnbows said its not a game they want their child knowing about.

Dandi Turnbow, the student's mother, said her fourth grade son was given the book to read in his class at Southern Hills Elementary. Their son read a few chapters of the book when they discovered some passages that disturbed them: including scenes depicting Egyptian worship rituals.

"I let him know this is not what we believe at all and this is not anything he needs to be subjected to," Dandi Turnbow said.

School District Officials said curriculum specialists have reviewed the book and find it appropriate, but the school honored the parents wishes and allowed the student to select a different book.

The Turnbows said, giving their son a new book isn't enough for them. They want the book banned altogether.

"The school understands that the parent objected. There were four students who chose the book. He was the only student that had an objection that came forward," said Renae Murphy, the school district's information officer.

"I'm not going to stop until its banned from the school district. I will not quiet down. I will not back down," said Jeff Turnbow, the student's father.

District officials tell us they try to honor parents' wishes, but there is a formal process to request a district-wide book ban.

"As far as the situation with this child.. It has been resolved. We do have a formal approval process in place if that parent wishes to ban it from all children but the request the request is for their own child," Murphy said.

"I also hope that it gets banned because I don't believe any student should be subjected to anything that has to do with evil gods or black magic," Dandi Turnbow said.

This book is not a religious text. There are 1000's of books with Christian characters and it hasn't turned all the devil worshipping kids, so yours should be OK.

Mommy (the good Christian) has a nasty expletive on her My Space page. And let's just say her lifestyle doesn't scream "I'm a God-fearing woman," At least not the way it reads on that profile. My children live in a Christian home, but they know that Christianity is only 2000 years old and that other religions were practiced before that. Here's the clincher- if you're concerned your child might broaden their intellect by reading a story, then ban your child from reading it, not mine.

I thank the Lord everyday that all my children are grown and dont have to put up with nut jobs like the Turnbows ruining their public school education. I would suggest you send your kids to a private christion school and leave the rest of us to live in the real world.

If I were mommy, I would be more concerned that the child were looking at my public myspace profile, than reading a fictional book about Egypt. Some questions are harder to answer than others. >.>

When Thomas Jefferson was drafting the Declaration of Independence, he edited the phrase "We hold these truths to be sacred..." to read instead "We hold these truths to be self-evident..." in order to reflect that ours is a country founded not on a state imposed morality religious intolerance - but on reason. Of course, he had a classical education and spoke 5 languages - not everyone is so enlightened. But still, I would expect "Christians" to conduct themselves like Paul, not Diocletian.

I'm pretty sure this story is just a deleted scene from Donnie Darko.

People should be open minded and willing to learn about other cultures. We have to learn about Christianity in school, and maybe not everyone is okay with that. Being close minded is allowing yourself to be ignorant about a sugject. The people that want this book banned probably don't understand or are scared to grasp that there ARE other acceptable religions in this world. This town is ridiculous.

The book is optional and not all parents are against their child reading the material. Many of the world's problems are because of a limited education or one which is focused strictly on religious beliefs. The parents want to force their views and beliefs on the child. Yes, children need direction and guidance but not at the expense of limiting their ability to think, analyze and make decisions for themselves, traits and characteristics they need in order to succeed as an adult.

If a parent does not want their child to read such a book then don't let him/her read it. This is a public school system not a private one. If you do not your kids to read such material than home school him/her or pay to put the child in a private Christian school where they will be taught according to what the parents believe; but do not ban the book because you do not want your kid to read it. This is a FREE COUNTRY!!

The Bible, wow it's a great book but, really have you read it? There is Sex between fathers, daughters and brothers. There is also lots of KILLING,that's ok. The child was given a chioce no one made him get that book. This is a FREE country.

I want my child to read the book. I want it available just as other books are available to students at the school. I shouldn't have to go buy the book simply because 1 parent decided they didn't want their child to read it. Give them access to a book of their choice and let each set of parents choose for themselves which books they allow their own child to read.

We should burn all books that tell kids to worship false gods. Let alone allow them in the school. BURN THEM!!!

I think that the school honored their wishes so they need to stop the drama. Some parents are happy subjecting their children to a variety of different cultures and history.

I have a problem with public schools in general. They try to force God out, but allow other 'gods' in. Some schools even ban the Bible. If you do not want your children exposed to the wrong teachings, don't send them to public schools.

Silly, silly, silly. It's a historical fact that in all cultures various deities were once worshiped. Many early Christians were once pagans. Maybe these parents should protest the teaching of American history. It could encourage kids to start a civil war!

I feel that if we as Christians can't read the bible or pray in school that those books shouldn't be there either. I have a 6th grader at the same school and they are reading about the greek gods not my choice of reading but I am reading this book with my son and we are using the Bible at the same time so that he understands that there is only 1 GOD and its our GOD and he understands this because he is in a GODLY home and to him this book that he is reading is like an any other fictionial book

It used to be the public school sytstem that sucked all the free thinking and creativity out of our children. But now I guess it starts with 4th graders at home. What a waste!!!!

BAN IT!!! It is not based on anything of God. I capitalize GOD. they cannot. The muslims or egyptians shouldn't try to sneak their material in our schools

Its interesting that their child is not being forced to read this book and yet they still wish to ban the book. Why not allow other parents to be parents and decide for themselves what is right for THEIR children. Who are these people to say what is good or bad? If it is not how you would like your children to be raised that's acceptable but keep your book banning to yourself.

This book SHOULD be banned. It isnt a historical book, but a fictional book about worship of "Set", whom the books calls the god of Evil and Black magic. 4th grade kids should not be exposed to worship of black arts in school. If christian views cant be expressed, no religious views should be! BAN IT BAN IT

Tuesday, Nov 10 at 10:38 PM Mike Williams wrote ...

People should read the book first and realize that its not just one comment or word, but the entire book that is about worship of "SET", what the book calls the egyptian god of evil and black magic. It should be banned

I am curious if this family has let their son read or see the Harry Potter stories. The school did the right and only necessary thing by letting the child pick another book. For goodness sakes...there could be a word or scene in every book ever written that someone could object to!!

Tuesday, Nov 10 at 9:33 PM melissa wrote ...

Parents should want their children to know about other civilizations, cultures, and even other religions. Wanting our children to be so narrow minded is why there is so much turmoil in the world. I would be very upset if this book was banned in our schools because then that is affecting my children's education. If you don't want your child to read the book fine but don't try and stop every other child from learning because thats not your right.

These types of people are typical of the fanatics that our soldiers are fighting against and should not be heard. Book banning should have gone out with Nazi Germany's downfall.
