(FLORIDA) The Orlando Police Department made a quick arrest after the November 6th mass shooting in an Orlando office building.

They've charged 40-year-old Jason Rodriguez with murder. As Rodriguez was brought into police headquarters, he was asked why.

"Why did you do it?" a reporter asked.

"They left me to rot!" Rodriguez responded.

The rampage began when a gunman entered a downtown Orlando high-rise building and opened fire in the offices of an engineering and architectural firm. When the shooting stopped, one person was dead and five others wounded. Not knowing their lives were in danger, workers in other offices were in a panic.

"As I was leaving for lunch, the girl I was having lunch with was coming back towards me yelling, 'There's gunshots.  Get back in the office!' We said our prayers looked for a save place in our office in CSE. He was still in the building,'" one employee said.

The gunman was nowhere to be found, even after an intensive floor-by-floor search. However, authorities had by this point identified him and knew that he was a former employee of the firm. A couple of hours later, Rodriguez's car was spotted outside his mother's apartment not far away. He surrendered without incident.

"A lot of people have been impacted but the O.P.D. and our residents have been extremely cooperative and this was really a model of how to respond to an incident like this," said one official.

A motive is not clear. Rodriguez had been let go by the firm Reynolds, Smith and Hills more than two years ago. The reason for his termination, company officials said, was poor performance.

"He was hired as an Engineer One, which is kind of a beginning engineer and his performance was pretty deficient from the start. We tried to work with him for eleven months and when he didn't improve, we let him go in June of 2007," said a spokesperson for Reynolds, Smith and Hills.

Since then, records show Rodriguez's life spiraled downward. He filed for bankruptcy in May and at that time, he owed thousands for student loans, unpaid child support, and money to the I.R.S. One of his only assets, his car, was what ultimately led police to him.

Company officials say they will be providing psychological and grief counseling to the families of those who witnessed or were present during the shooting.
