Republicans are smiling this morning after a very strong showing last night. The GOP won two key races for governor, as the party looks to rebuild after losing power in the last two elections.

One year after being elected, President Barack Obama is facing a new challenge from the Republican minority. The GOP rolled to victory in the New Jersey and Virginia governor's races with a big boost from the independent voters who sided with Democrats last year.

Michael Steele, Chairman Republican National Committee, said, "Its a party who found its voice again and was able to speak to people and it was able to do it with good candidates."

Conservative Republican Bob McDonnell won easily in Virginia. BOb McDonnell, (R) Virginia Governor-elect said, "Tonight you have hired me. Thank you."

And in New Jersey, Chris Christie edged out Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine in a very tough battle. Christie will be New Jersey's first GOP governor in more than a decade.

Chris Christie,(R) Governor NJ Elect, "This election was and is about the future of the state we love--the great state of New Jersey."

Republicans say last night's results clearly show voters are not happy with the Obama administration, but Democrats argue the governors' races were isolated elections that focused on local issues. A Democrat  did win an open congressional seat in upstate New York. In a bizarre race where a moderate GOP candidate withdrew, Democrat Bill Owens captured a seat long led by Republicans.

Steve Chaggaris, CBS News Political Director, "I think to say it's a referendum specifically on President Obama is a bit of a stretch."

And analysts are divided over what the results  could mean for next year when a third of the senate, all members of the House and most governors are up for re-election.
