Each year dozens of horses are neglected and abused right here in Texoma. So one local organization is stepping up to help. But they can't do it alone.

Second Chance Ranch is a non-profit organization run completely by volunteers. They take in donated and neglected horses from across Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas and this weekend the ranch is giving the public the opportunity to help.

Neglected horses seem to be an increasing problem in Texoma.

"It's really gotten to be a bad problem since the Horse Slaughter Act. There's no way of getting rid of old horses so they're just left out in pasture sometimes without food or water," said Second Chance Ranch President Wilma O'Connell.

So the Second Chance Ranch takes in those unwanted horses and provides shelter, food, veterinary care and rehabilitation.

The ranch is currently caring for 40 horses. All of which are in much better shape than when they first arrived.

"They were totally starved to death. It's just bones, no meat at all it's just sad. Total neglect," O'Connell said.

While maintaining a ranch is hard work, it can also be fun. Duties include everything from brushing the horses and preparing feed buckets to fixing fences and leveling the land. It's a team effort and volunteers say all the hard work is worth helping a good cause.

"They're all so compassionate toward animals. It's amazing to see the horses from when they first come in and how they improve over just a short amount of time and good food. It's very rewarding," O'Connell said.

Volunteer Day is Saturday from 10 to 5 at Second Chance Ranch's Holliday location. It's at 15040 FM 368. These designated work days are important so the ranch will be able to accommodate more horses in need. The whole family is invited to come get involved. Free food and drinks will be provided. T-shirts and hats will also be for sale and all proceedes will go toward caring for the horses.

After horses are rehabilitated, the ranch strives to find loving homes to adopt them. Now adoption fees can be as cheap as one $150.
