Flooding: Water Rescues, Road Closures Overnight

Abbie Carter

From just after midnight and for several hours, major roads in Wichita County were under water. That caused the Texas Department of Transportation to set up road blocks to keep motorists out of harms way.

The first closed were on I-44 in and out of Burkburnett. Nearby roads at Loop 11 and U.S. Highway 287 were also closed on the northbound side. In both cases, traffic was being stopped and turned around back to Wichita Falls.

But the real story was happening out on Huntington Lane. Lee Seaberry says, "...And then I seen a blanket floating across the bedroom floor." He says he was barely able to get his wallet and pants and get out. But he is still worried about his dog. Seaberry says, "sad news is my dog was in the back yard... I got him on a trolly and i grabbed my paints and was gonna go get the dog and couldn't even get to him. I had to leave him."

Emergency Management was prepared. They headed out in the county's new Emergency Management Command Center to coordinate disaster operations. A Wichita County Emergency Management spokesperson says, "...Then all of a sudden some flash flooding around Huntington and Wellington Lanes and we had to evacuate people from flooding then houses and on their roofs." Wichita County's emergency management coordinator says he hopes the rain that is predicted later today doesn't materialize. That way their rescue efforts can turn to recovery and clean up operations.
