Residents in Burk asked for change at tonight's city council meeting. Many feel the Burk Police Department and even some City Officials are mishandling business.

The council meeting began with numerous residents and even a former police investigator wanting councilmen to answer questions about alleged corruption in the city's police department.

"When one person tells you something and you don't agree with it and you go talk to the Chief of Police or whoever you gotta talk to, you get harassed and harassed," Resident Susan Disney said, "And it's not just you, it's your kids."

Disney said officers have shown up at door steps because residents have spoken up that there's an issue with how certain officers handle business. She said some officers will pull you over for no reason and speed around town.

Pete Couture said one officer in particular turned relatives loose for felonies.

"It started after some juveniles were involved in an accident. All 3 were intoxicated. They were related to a police officer and he wiped the paper work clean and basically swept it under the rug," Couture said.

He reported it to the District Attorneys office and says he was brought in to the police department for two hours saying they wanted to know where he got his information from.

"I've even gone so far as in council to ask them, 'have I made a claim that you have not verified under your own investigation?' Everything I've said has been proven," Couture said.

He said he was threatened by another officer when he went up to the station wanting to get a copy of the report.

"Another employee walks up, looks at me and says, 'is Mr. Couture up here causing problems?' looked at me and said, 'I'm gunna go out and kick your motorcycle over," He said.

When asked to comment, Chief of Police Mike Tracey who was at the council meeting declined our invitation.

"There are very fine officers in Burk and they're paying a penalty for a couple," Couture said.

No action was taken tonight. The alleged corruption was just open for discussion and residents are still waiting for an answer.

How about enlisting a big legal broom & see if a cleaning of the house is justified? Perhaps most would prefer a burning at the stake in the middle of town. C'mon people...name calling and personal attacks puts everyone at the same level and that would be below our new curbs.

Lots o' time & energy put into the slamming of one another here. As I drive around town, I see so many unkept homes, lots, etc. that this "extra energy" could be utilized. Let an outside source shuffle through this mess and let the chips fall where they may.

I have a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice with family ties in Burkburnett. I am a tenured professor of criminal justice at a major university. I am appalled at the actions of the Burkburnett Police Department. Changes must be made. The police system in America is designed to serve the public not hinder it. I am certain there will be a major investigation into this department. Can the city afford to pay for all the lawsuits that will come out of this? Watch your property taxes soar.

The city needs to form a Police Commission. Every other city department has a city appointed commission, why not the police?

It's obvious that the posted blogs are being "swept" in favor of shock news. The bottom line is that an officer used discretion to show compassion in an event that could ruin a young man's life.Time will tell if the effort is justified. So far so good. The surfacing of this news is sour grapes due to the new leaders quashing the accusers long time misappropriation of power that has garnerd him quite a cache of property. is a proven professional. He'll remediate the problem ....with time

The actions of a few corrupt officers in Burkburnett have tainted the reputation of every law enforcement officer in Wichita County, including mine. How will the citizens ever trust their officers if the police lie, cheat, and steal? Someone should definately lose their job for this. If the Chief of Police can't grow a spine and get rid of the problem children in the department, the City Manager should have the guts to stand up and get rid of them BOTH. Corruption has no place in policing.

Thank You Dr.CriminalJustice Thanks for your input can you help get the ball rolling the City Manager & one Council (lawyer type) have the other council members buffaloed. As far as the City being able to afford the lawsuits, no they can't they are already looking at a hefty fine from the TCEQ. By the way people there is a special city council meeting being called on Monday 6/23 come to it. Once again the City Manager has diverted the attention away from himself.

Ever wonder why the employees of Burk can't get a good pay raise... the City Manager got an $8500 "performance" bonus. I'd hate to see what it would be if he did a good job.

$8500 job performance bonus...that equates to 34 $250 bonuses for city employees. More than what an employee that has dedicated 15 years of service to this city has received in bonuses. What's wrong with this picture? For those of you who approved the bonus...think of this the next time the water main breaks, your house is on fire, you require paramedic assistance, you have a pot hole on your street, need trees trimmed or picked up or the countless other svcs our city employees provide!!

Does this shock anyone? It has gone on for years. It all depends on who you know or what your last name is in the town of Burkburnett. If you have the right last name or you are in with the "right" person you've got it made. If not you better walk a straight line or else you will be dealing with the police from here on out. The same goes for the school system. If your kid isn't good in sports or have the right name she/he might as well hang it up because you will not get any special favors

Been living in Burk my whole life. Know all about harrassment, mine and my kids. And as far as the chief goes, he has been involed since he was just a lowly street cop. Once you get stopped for any reason you are never left alone. And don't get stopped for a tail light out unless you want the whole force to check you out. Almost the whole force is corrupt.

The officer that "covered" up that juveniles DWI was in the wrong. Rather than ask the officer he took matters into his own hands by destroying evidence. Police have to take Ethics...how come it hasn't sunk in?

Corruption in Burkburnett is city wide in my opinion because the BISD is just as corrupt as the city. The kids whose parents are in the elite clique definitely get special treatment. Maybe now that the corruption that is going on with the city officials is being brought to light,it will also expose some of the BISD problems which are many. Burkburnett is definitely the nepotism / good-ol-boy capitol of Texas. I may be "home now" but I'm ready to leave!

I am from Burkburnett and was appalled to hear the allegations being made. I have heard about several times the Burkburnett Police acted unethically. I was witness to a drunk driving accident. The parents of the 17-yr old driving were allowed to take him home after he slammed into a car, a fence, and a tree. He didn't get as much as a slap on the wrist. I don't know about you but all that would teach me is that I can do whatever I want. What happens when next time he kills an innocent person?

Saturday, Jun 21 at 4:33 PM Anonymous wrote ...

If anyone says a word about the Burkburnett Police Department, there will be nothing but harassment for them and their family from now on. They need to train their officers more on the Laws of the State and one's Constitutional Rights. They think they can do what they want to anyone and get by with it and they pretty much do. It is time for the people of Burkburnett to speak up.

I have lived here most of my life, could not and do not want to live any where else, is there problems YES, but we can rise above it if we are willing. Changes need to be made, I don't know exactly where or who, sometimes you just start at the top and work your way down, its a long, hard road but it's the way we need to go, use good advise, and wisdom and move forward. No one is perfect we all make mistakes, we are to learn from them not but punished for a life time.

If any of us were to tamper with evidence it would be a criminal offense. Since the City doesn't want to be sued, they've decided to handle this in house and allow the 3 days suspension with pay to be the LT's punishment. WFPD doesn't put up with that!!

i had lived in Burk for over 40 years and have witnessed the preffered treatment that alot get, have also witnessed a child to be harrassed because of the way they dressed or the vehicle they chose to drive, Until the citizens stand up against the so called city manager and get him removed and then clean up the police dept from top to bottom nothing will change. Remember 'If you continue to do what you have allways done ,you will continue to get what you have allways got. Dont miss burk at all

We are going to need outside intervention. Outside Wichita County area, the Wichita County District Attorny's office has no interest, not sensational enough for them. Write or call TCLEOSE at (512) 936-7746 or on the web www.tcleose.state.tx.us/index.htm They are the state agency that oversees law enforcement officials. They have complaint forms on the web site you can submit.
