Tyler Car Sinks

Fred Smith

TYLER, Texas (AP) - Tyler police say an elderly couple died after their car sped down a residential street and drove through the yards of two homes before plunging into a pond. Neighbor Doug Marshall says he jumped into the water Sunday night to try to rescue the couple, but that he could not find their car once the headlights went out. Police who arrived also went into the water and managed to locate the vehicle. Police spokesman Don Martin overnight identified the pair as Jake and Betty Smith of Tyler. Martin said the victims were believed to be in their late 70s or early 80s. Martin says the vehicle also hit a tree before going into the pond. It was not immediately clear what caused the accident
