The Wichita Falls Police Department and City Hall are both in need of a major face-lift. To make it successful city leaders are looking to build brand new buildings.
For 80 years city hall has been in memorial auditorium, and as the city expands the rooms aren't getting any bigger. So leaders are in the preliminary stages of making some major changes, and it started with finding out how much space is really needed.
"These buildings are going to be here a long time when they build them, so you don't want to build a building that you can only fit your people today." said Wichita Falls Police Chief Dennis Bachman.
That's why the City of Wichita Falls hired architects to come up with several designs to give them an idea of what this project would include and cost. The top pick for many seems to be a downtown location so the departments can finally be in one location.
"Right now we are spread around in several different locations. so that will make it easier one for management of staff and also for people coming to which ever department they want to see." said Wichita Falls Mayor Lanham Lyne.
Even the Wichita Falls Police Department is cramped.
Many ask about the training facility space, but Chief Bachman says since it's been built the police department has only grown. And with no more room to give, leaders agree it's time to build for the future.
"We are going to have to make it happen sooner or later." said Mayor Lyne.
The next step is financing. The cost is anywhere from 75 to 100 million dollars! A huge project, the mayor hopes will break ground within 5 years.
But he says ultimately it's up to the citizens since the funding is likely to come from taxes. Mayor Lanham Lyne also said right now the project is just focused on the city's need but there has been some discussion with county leaders out doing something joint with the county courthouse.
