Students from Cameron University  in Lawton spent the day on,  not off for Martin Luther King day.  They are part of volunteers across the country who banded together for the MLK Day of Service.
More than two hundred and fifty Cameron University students filled the Boys & Girl's Club in Lawton volunteering on their day off from classes to support their community.
"We really wanted the students who come to the Boys & Girls Club to know that the community cares about them."  said Jennifer Holland, Cameron Dean of Student Services.
For five and half hours they scrubbed, painted, re-organized, cleaned-out and put away.  The students even created a 'teen room" for the older kids that come to the Boys and Girls Club.
"I think the overall turnout response was very positive. We got a lot of work done. The teen room came out much better than I ever thought it would, our homework room is much more lively, more friendly for the kids to go into and do their homework after school." said Crystal Durham, Director of the Boys & Girls Club.
The university received a one-thousand dollar grant in support of the project from the MLK Challenge 2009.  With those funds they purchased the necessary supplies.
"As our numbers of volunteers grew, so did our list of projects. So we've really been able to come in today and make a huge difference with what's going on." said Jennifer Holland.
Holland says making a difference for the Boys and Girl's Club wasn't the only goal.
"We also wanted to teach our students at Cameron University the importance of volunteerism giving back to your community and the life long investment of providing service to your community." said Holland.
In 2008, more than five hundred thousand people volunteered for the Martin Luther King Day of Service.  Officials expect an even bigger number this year.
