As the Salmonella threat continues to expand, so does the impact on many local businesses.  But some owners are fighting back with major changes. Tomatoes are already in the spotlight for possible salmonella contamination, and just yesterday the FDA added raw Jalapeno and Serrano peppers to the list.

They are the  main ingredients in many favorite Mexican dishes, so Ricardo Cantu, Owner of El Mejicano, is making major changes. It's not required, but Cantu has done away with the raw vegetables in question, and is altering recipes that required the questionable foods

"But the recipe we are using and improvising is still a quality recipe and the customers like it." said Cantu.

If you want to eat the Jalapeno or Serrano peppers, just make sure they're cooked or processed! Health Officials say it's the only way to avoid getting sick.

Officials also say the next time you eat out, be sure to ask your server if there are any concerns. And remember if the peppers are cooked or from a bottle or can they are safe to eat.

Salmonella symptoms include headache, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea and sometimes vomiting. It lasts about four to seven days. Sufferers should drink plenty of water, get extra rest and see a doctor.
