Water woes continue near the City Of Electra this time for residents in Punkin Center. Electra supplies residents with water but found out the water supply is anything but perfect!
A water rate increase to households North of Electra is in the works, and many residents are flustered. The issue is 21 households have been paying for discolored water for about a year. Although the discolored water is sporadic, residents say the yellow tint is a good day.
Leaders stress the water is safe, but as you can imagine residents still want it clear! So what's to blame? Leaders say there are 3 pipes that service residents. 2 are fairly new but one is an 80 year old cast iron pipe that many believe is the cause for this problem. It affected 21 households at first, but over time many houses were switched to the newer pipes. That left about 8 to ten homes still dealing with tinted water.
But since this past Thursday, those households may have seen a permanent fix because part of the old cast iron pipe was shut off.
"We hope that will make a difference don't know if it will fix the problem permanently and won't commit to that because the system is so old out there." said Electra City Administrator Steve Giesbrecht
Leaders eventually want to shut off the entire 80 year old pipe.
"The city of Electra is committed to fixing this problem and doing whatever it takes to it fixed."
Electra city councilors have final say on a water rate increase for out-of-town residents. They voted yes in one meeting, but are required to hold two more votes on the issue.
