Storm Tears Path Through Altus, OK

Just 40 miles to the north of Vernon... Altus, Oklahoma was hit hard by the same storm system.

Straight winds that are estimated to have reached eighty miles an hour tore a large path of destruction in Altus, Oklhoma..

"The residents in 6the southern half of thed city were hit hardest. And there's a lot of trees down," said Matt Coppock. He is the Public Information Manager for the city. He says most of the damage is in the form of downed trees, roofs ripped off of buildings and windows blown out of homes.

These two girl's father lived in this apartment building. Luckily, they weren't home when the storm hit.

"We were at church and we weren't expecting this at all. We got home and we seen everything was like super destroyed. We had no iea this was going to happen," said Arzola.

Bricks were literally ripped off the sides of the apartment, as well as the roof on the back part of the structure.

Coppock says the big job for the city now, is clean up. He says crews are busy cleaning electrical easements so power can be restored. As for Altus Air Force Base, Coppock says its main issue is getting power restored. However it also received some damage. "They received a few things that were damaged as far as some hanger doors blown in, things like that. A few roof problems, but nothing major, nothing like this," said Coppock. Altus Air Force Base was due to get some generators from three bases, including Sheppard.
