Iowa Park City Charter

News1 KAUZ

Iowa Park residents are heading to the polls this weekend, and one vote could change how the entire city is operated.

Officials want to change the city's charter which would basically give more authority to leaders and residents. The driving force behind the proposal, comes from the concern of where registered sex offenders can live. Currently there is a restriction in place in the city, but a new statement from the Attorney General could change everything. Which has Iowa Park checking its charter.

Iowa park is the last city in Wichita County that falls under general law, meaning it follows state guidelines.

"We feel like by restricting sex offenders we are  protecting our citizens. However because of  the AG opinion, it could be challenged in a court of law, and we would spend tax payers money to defend our position." said Iowa Park City Administrator Mike Price.

But if voters approve switching the charter to Home Rule City citizens and leaders would have a stronger voice. However Price said this proposal failed in the past because residents felt the city would have too much control.

"It doesn't it gives that citizens more authority."

City administrator Mike Price says currently residents cannot recall a city leader, but Price says that also could change in the charter if Iowa Park becomes a home rule city.

"In the event that they approve that, it also allows them to pick 15 commissioners that will be charged with preparing that charter." said Price.

After creating the charter, the commissioners would present it to councilors then turn it over to voters in November.

But residents have to pass the measure first this Saturday. Iowa park residents can vote at The Friendly Door at North 3rd Street from 7a.m. to 7p.m. Voters will also decide on a Mayor, two council seats and two trustee positions on the school board.
