Wichita Falls Skate Park: Set to Open in June

News1 KAUZ

The end is in sight for construction on the new Wichita Falls Skate Park. Today the park board met to lay down the rules. It's not open to the public yet, but with a variety of skills and ages comes a need for rules.

"Most of the rules are common sense but we want to make sure everyone is playing on the same level and no one is taking advantage of the situation." said Chair of The Wichita Falls Park Board Alan Donaldson.

Donaldson said the discussed rules start with no one under 6 years old. Also anyone under 11 must have adult supervision with them.

" It's is a high risk sport so helmets will be required." said Donaldson.

Also no alcohol, or bottles at the park. And although hours aren't officially set, one skater and skate shop owner hopes it will be open late so the more experienced older crowd can truly benefit.

"When it's hot outside they can take advantage of going out late without the little kids being in the way." said Deviance Skate Supply Owner Jeff Marion.

Posting the rules will allow police officers to get involved as needed.

"Instead of just a slap on the wrist they can take some action for someone not following the rules." said Donaldson.

Before the rules are finalized the Wichita Falls Park Board will present them to Wichita Falls City Councilors for final approval.

But with rules being discussed the anticipation to the parks grand opening is building.

" We have got a pretty unique park. Like our bowels and everything are completely different than other parks so hopefully it will bring in people from out of town." said Marion.

The ribbon cutting ceremony is set to take place around the first of June. The parks isn't only for skate-boarders, B-M-X riders, in-line skaters and of course spectators are all welcome!

yeah i agree with the peeps that are saying to make it an skate at your own risk park cause i mean ive been skating for about six years now and i mean it sucks when every park you go to its the same old thing no helmet no skate. i mean if i was scared to get scraped up i wouldnt of started this sport i speak for alot of kids on that one. just let the hardheaded beginners think and not wear one i guarentee they will take one good slam then they will throw one of them bad boys on

When you step up to this park... trust me, you'll want to wear a helmet.. This park does not have a beginner's area. 90% of the park is for experienced and advance skateboarders.. You will hear this complaint from your kids. No lazy cruising here... it's SK8 or DIE. If you don't believe me, go see it for yourself.

They said wearing seat belts would never work being mandatory. Maybe make not wearing the helmet a just like not wearing the seat belt. Fines have a way of getting compliance with common sense.

I doubt that the city would be able to get insurance if helmets weren't required. Funny how you don't see the pros skating w/o helmets. Hmmm.....

I agree with james. I worked at a park in Virginia and it was a constant hassel to make kids put on their helmets. It doesnt matter how much you push it kids just do not want to wear them. Kids will risk getting kicked out just because they do want to wear them. It will be alot easier for who ever is running the park and for the kids if helmets are optional.

They're making a big mistake attempting to force helmets. It will be a continual point of contention, plus many kids would rather skate elsewhere instead of wear a helmet. It ought to be skate at your own risk.
