As wildfires raged thursday afternoon evacuations forced many Texoma residents to flee from their homes. In this week's You Ask We Investigate Report, Dan Garcia says the scenario left many asking how to handle the situation.
When you don't have time to think it's a good idea to plan ahead for the unpredictable weather and circumstances that might happen in Texoma. To get those answers I went to experts to find out. Planning now, could save you your life later. Thursday's raging wild fires forced the evacuation of many residents in several Texoma towns. As reported, three people perished in the flames. What would you do if a raging wild fire were to threaten your home? Adam Brinkman with the Wichita West Fire Department says, you only have one choice.
"The best thing you can do if you're by yourself, honestly, if you know the fire's coming at you, don't dry to save your house. The best thing is get in your car get on the road and leave," said Brinkman. Brinkman says yesterday, the fires were being pushed by seventy plus mile an hour winds. That made the wildfires extremely dangerous... and no match to try and save property. Many are forced to pick up the pieces after numerous homes were leveled. What are those folks supposed to do? State Farm Insurance Agent Mindy Anderle says the first thing to do is contact your insurance agent. Then.... "If you have some damage like part of your roof has been burned or anything that's caused further damage, you want to try to protect your home from further damage," said Anderle. If you have to buy repair materials, keep receipts. And she says if you have to vacate while repairs are made... keep all receipts for food, lodging other expenses. Above all else... both she and Brinkman say safety is the number one rule. When I spoke with volunteer fire fighter Adam Brinkman, he also said to avoid any downed power lines. He says high voltages even make it dangerous to try to cross even in a car. Wednesday, Apr 22 at 4:39 PM Bryan Ivy wrote ...How do I make Kauz.com my home page?? I mean they are still allowed to drive a city bus even after numerous complaints are made about the unsafe lane changes, speed of the bus, neglecting to looking before turning or changing lanes. Why are city employees allowed to drive wreckless and get by with it?? Even Police officers get away with driving over the speed limit with NO LIGHTS and NO Siren?? Are they above the law? If you're using Internet Explorer, there's a link above the still Doppler image in the middle column that reads "Make KAUZ.com your homepage." Just click that and it will set your homepage to kauz.com. If you're using Firefox, this might not appear, so just go to your "Tools" menu at the top of the window, scroll down to "Options," when that box pops up, click on the "Main" tab, and then select "Use Current Page" to set kauz.com as your homepage, or just type in www.kauz.com. Then click "apply."
