You Ask, We Investigate... is on the case of the foreign lotteries scam. The scheme is re-surfacing again in Wichita Falls, and scammers are sending out checks for thousands... that are very convincing.

Dale Emory thought he hit the jackpot last week. That's because he got this check in the mail. The check was for more than $4,700 and it was made out to him.

"Well I opened this letter and there was a check with a letter in it saying I'd won a lottery," said Emory.

Emory says the check was so authentic it even had markings showing it had been drawn from a bank in Syracuse, New York. All he had to do was deposit the check in the bank. He had even been contacted by a man urging him to deposit the money right away. But there was one thing preventing him from proceeding. "What stopped me cold? I'd never seen a check that big, so I thought something was up somewhere," said Emory.

HIS WIFE CONFIRMED HIS FEARS BY GOING ONLINE. THERE WAS A RED ALERT --WARNING PEOPLE TO SIMPLY TEAR UP THE CHECK, BECAUSE IT WAS BOGUS.

Monica Horton with the Better Business Bureau says once that check is cashed, the local victim has given up all their bank information, allowing the scammers access to their account. When the check comes back fraudulent, the bank goes after the victims for all the money it is out. Since these operations are set up outside the country... there is nothing U.S. authorities can do.

Bottom line, if you get a check saying you've won... tear it up.
