Dan Garcia

There has been quite a bit of talk about doing away with the 18 cent a gallon gasoline tax for the summer months. You Ask, We Investigate, got a question wondering if there would be much in the way of savings at all.

Whether they're riding motorcycles...

Driving cars...

Or crossing the country in a huge motor home. Drivers are still putting gas in their tanks. Right now, politicians are pushing to get the gasoline tax suspended for the summer, between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That's about a fifteen week period. The feelings of those motorists were a bit mixed in how much they think doing away with that 18-cent a gallon tax would help over the summer.

One man even went so far as to say it would hurt another part of the economy. Namely the highway industry. That's because the 18-cent a gallon tax, goes to build and repair the highway system. We decided to break things down to see for ourselves. Our examples are based on being able to make it a week on one fill up, the size of the tank in a vehicle and that times 18 cents. Then we multiplied one week's worth of savings over the 15 week.

For a standard car with a 15 gallon tank it's estimated the savings would be about $40.50. For a mini-van with a 20 gallon tank, the savings for the summer would amount to $54.00. And for a quarter-ton pick-up truck, the savings for 15 weeks would be $70.20.

Of course one group this would help would be truck drivers. They are spending a thousand dollars or more on one fill up. And as you can imagine, they're probably filling up more than once a week.

In the mean time, if you've got a question, give us a call at 687-U-ASK, that number again, 687-8275.
