There is a lot of talk about the tax rebates and who is going to get them. But there's one group of people who are so far left out of the plans, and they would benefit the most from the extra cash.
The U.S. House of Representatives was first to pass a version of the economic stimulus package. But their version of the bill excluds senior citizens.
"Now the situation will be if your income is on, -- from Social Security and pensions, then it does not count as earned income and so under the house version, some of those people will not be eligible."
And that surely means most senior citizens aren't included in the current house version. The Senate will hopefully tackle its version of the bill this coming week. And it will include seniors as well as other groups. In debates on the senate floor earlier this week, Senator Blanche Lincoln said. "The Senate plan, Mr. President, is a good plan. It's good for America, it's good for seniors, it's good for disabled veterans... And it's good for our economy."
But Congressman Thornberry was quick to add, the version of the bill that passed in the House isn't the final version. He says the House's biggest concern is that others in Congress move quickly. That's because at some point, people could start adding pork and the bill would get bogged down.
However, in answer to seniors being included..... Representative Thornberry says, "Sure, the final version has not been written."
